I race by, tantalizing the children with a parcel beautifully-wrapped, zoomed just beyond their reach though they grasp in giddy excitement, relenting only to chase one another in circles, like milady’s lapdog at its tail, over the landing, escaping down nearby corridors. The garlanded banisters perfume the air with evergreen to mingle with the wafting scents of simmering cinnamon, crackling pine logs and bowls of clove-studded oranges among its cones and rich aromas sighing from a distant oven door whiffs of baking pies and roasting meats within our midst. Following my husband who disappears behind the massive tree up the grand staircase I enter a magnificent room of untold delights to curtsy beside him and press our hostess’ hands; this sister rivets in a butter-colored gown weeping elegance from each bevel and facet. Graciousness her counterpart affectionately guides me from the elbow to a table of champagne flutes where the other couples await already bubbling with conversation. Waltzing, weaving, swaying, twirling later, among the other satined sentinels guarding this arena of mischief, Paul drinks double-fisted in tribute while jigging I join ladies swirling skirts and coloring high. A genteel evening holiday, imbibing ere we dine.
